Customer Review: Phenomenal Printer ... for about a year

This printer creates phenomenal quality prints, up to 13 by 19 inches. I was thrilled with its performance during the first few months of owning it. I had no troubles setting it up, or getting it to work with Adobe Lightroom. (Like others, I can't get it to work with iPhoto).
But after about a year the problems started. It simply won't feed paper. I have settled on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag paper after trying a number of alternatives, and I've been able to get outstanding prints from this paper and printer. But suddenly, the printer won't feed paper. It makes all sorts of noise, and then the paper light starts blinking. I push the button and gears and rollers turn, but the paper doesn't move. If I hold the paper just right, applying some downward pressure, it will finally grab it and draw it into the printer, but most of the time it just rolls it all the way through and plops a blank page in the output tray.
I've tried cleaning the rollers with alcohol, which seemed to work for a few prints, but now we're right back to the same problems. This printer has probably run through a couple hundred sheets of paper - that's a miniscule fraction of what a multi-hundred dollar printer should be able to handle. Having read numerous comments on various internet sites, it's clear that I'm not the only one seeing this problem.
Epson needs to admit that they royally screwed up on this design, and offer a no-cost solution to those of us who bought it. Otherwise, I'll be looking at Canon printers, and will write Epson off as the company that offers the ultimate print quality, but just can't quite manage to get the paper into the printer.

I used to be an Epson sales rep (and I'm not working for a different printer now) and I've had this printer for over two years but be warned, it simply will not print properly on matte paper through the normal sheet feeder. I'm stuck with several boxes of Moab's beautiful Lasal Matte which either won't feed at all or will shoot through unprinted -even with me standing over the printer trying to carefully push it into the feeder at exactly the right moment. If I'm lucky one sheet will print after maybe five tries. If I'm not there it will never print at all. It's maddening and completely unacceptable for a printer of this price.
This happens as well with Epson's own Matte papers. Only glossy papers will actually feed through properly.
I talked to a certified Epson repair person and he said that this is essentially normal. I could try spending $250 to replace the gripper/feeder but he doubted it would make a difference. The feeder mechanism is simply inadequate. Only thin matte paper will feed through with any reliability -essentially "plain paper".
Be warned.

I find it very unfortunate to have to write this review. I own both the Epson R1800 and R2400. As a professional, working photographer, I gave thought to buying the 4800.
I will never buy an Epson printer again.
First, I have never had drama-free printing. All I was trying to do with either printer was get a 20 image portfolio completed. Neither machine was able to get through the job without either needing an ink change, have the heads realigned or fail to communicate with the IEEE port. So, the workflow becomes interrupted and, by the time you figure out what happened, you're way behind and wondering where you left off.
The R1800 has created huge black streaks with larger format papers. It's useless for larger prints.
After owning the R2400 for about 16 months, it just developed a fatal flaw with horizontal lines which are not correctable by head realignment nor using the think paper command (a sub dialogue in the maintenance menu).
The R1800 developed a blue shift that is uncorrectable.
Notably, these machines have relatively little use, because it was impossible to get a workflow going with them anyway.
I contacted Epson regarding where I could get the machines repaired. I never heard back. Latest estimate from a private shop is a total of $500+ to get the machines functioning again.
What a shame.

Epson Stylus R2400 Photo Printer
I replaced an older Epson Stylus with this R2400 Large Format unit after countless occasions of the inks clogging the print heads. I am happy to say I have not experienced this recurrance even one time with the R2400, so I'm a happy camper.
I use the printer to create bird photo greeting cards so the archival ink is a must. The R2400 supports glossy, matte, luster, fine art or posterboard prints in clear, consice colors. Printing is fast, and the 8-color ink set seems to outlast previous cartridges plus having the advantage of replacing a single color. It is also superior for black and white art prints with its Advanced Black-and-White Photo Mode, and it also allows use of border-free 13" x 44" roll paper.
It's a perfect addition to the digital photo studio.

On a good day, this printer can produce brilliant prints with excellent image quality.
On a bad day, plan to spend HOURS and LOTS of ink dealing with clogged heads, paper feed problems, and driver issues.
Image quality is 5 stars, reliability is 1 star.
